When Mike Johnson retired from Alliant Energy in 2015 he was looking for something to fill his days. That free time led him to the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA and he’s been a daily visitor ever since.
“I wanted to keep physically fit and keep moving,” Johnson said. “I like the people at the Y, I like the employees and the atmosphere is great.”
The Marshalltown resident loves to do strength and cardio training at the Y. The cancer survivor is an inspiration for his dedication.
“I just turned 70 last week and I got a really good report from the doctor,” he said.
Johnson realizes that the Y is much more than just a gym and he loves the community aspect of everything. Employees at the Y always love to see Mike around and the positive energy he brings to the Y.
“Mike knows no strangers here at the Y,” said Angie Paxson, Health and Wellness Director at the Y. “He always has a smile on his face and time to chat. Mike creates a welcoming atmosphere and family feeling here at the Y.”
Johnson jokes that he does so much socializing with other members and staff that it often takes him three hours for his 90-minute workout each day.
“It’s a great place to get your exercise and your social time,” he said.
