Welcoming All Creates a Stronger Community

As CEO of the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of community. Our mission has always been to strengthen the foundations of our community, promoting healthy living, fostering social responsibility and nurturing the potential of every individual who walks through our doors.

Again this year, the Y will participate in Welcoming Week from September 13-22. This annual celebration encourages communities to embrace newcomers and ensure that everyone, regardless of where they come from, feels they belong. At the Y, we see this week as an opportunity to reflect on our shared values and the integral role newcomers play in our neighborhoods.

Moreover, the cultural diversity immigrants bring enriches our community life, fostering an environment where we can all learn from one another. At the Y, we witness daily how programs that bring people from different backgrounds together lead to greater understanding and mutual respect. Whether it’s through connecting in a group exercise class or simply sharing stories over a cup of coffee in our lobby, these interactions break down barriers and build lasting connections.

On Sunday, September 22, the Y is partnering with the Arts + Culture Alliance, Marshalltown Public Library, Marshalltown Central Business District and Immigrant Allies to host the Culture Festival in Downtown Marshalltown from 1-4 p.m.  We invite you and your family to attend this free event to shop, dine and experience our vibrant community.

The impact of Welcoming Week extends far beyond this celebration. It sets the tone for how we interact with each other every day, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels they belong. This sense of belonging is crucial for the well-being and success of all community members.  This is at the heart of the Y’s mission to strengthen spirit, mind and body for all.
