Great memories created in coaching Y sports

Being a coach in Y sports is something I’ll remember the rest of my life.  I love that the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA leagues are there for youth to learn the sport in a laid-back setting. That allows for more quality time with my own kids and the team.

It’s so rewarding to see how much they improve during the year, and see that look on their face when they connect on that long hit or score their first basket. Many have that surprised look as if to say “I really can do it!”

I’ve had older siblings help coach the team, other parents and even grandparents get into the act if I need them to help out.

Oftentimes you wonder what impact you will have on these kids, as there is not often direct feedback. I see the feedback when they see me around town and get a big smile and wave at me.

Our youngest child is now too old for T-Ball at the Y and being able to coach him these last few years is something I’ll cherish, even if it’s sad that he’s aged out from the league. Kids grow up fast and I’ll never regret the time I spent as his coach.

The Y T-Ball league is starting the week of May 6 for ages 4-8. I encourage parents to sign up their children and consider coaching.  The time commitment is not huge, but the rewards are.
