Buddy system key for workout duo

For Deb Stahl and Georgia Thomas, the buddy system works for them to keep pace with their exercise routine. The duo exercise together at the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA about four days a week.


They hold each other accountable as they do various exercises including stretching, strength training and cardio, side by side. Stahl said that being there for each other helps with keeping that routine.


“You know they are going to be there, so you don’t want to let them down,” Stahl said.

Thomas said having a workout buddy is “essential” for her.

“It’s so easy to just say, I’ll go tomorrow (instead of today),” she said.


Thomas said she notices the benefits of moving, especially as the body ages.

“As you age, it’s so critical to keep moving and this is a good way to do it,” Thomas said.

Both said they also love the Y for the socialization aspect as they catch up with friends while they visit.
“It’s like a community,” Stahl said.
